Washington Spirit head coach Richie Burke stepped down from his position due to “health concerns,” the team announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Burke, who’s been the Spirit head coach since 2019, will be re-assigned to a front-office position when he’s able to return.
“Yesterday Richie advised me of some health concerns and we mutually agreed that it was in the best interests of him and of the club for him to step down as our coach,” said Larry Best, Spirit President of Sporting Operations, in a statement. “Once Richie’s health improves, he will join the sporting operations front office staff.”
The Spirit went 19-16-14 under Burke’s tutelage and are seventh in the National Women’s Soccer League this season with a 5-5-3 record.
Assistant coach Kris Ward will lead the team in this Friday’s game on the road against the Houston Dash, according to The Athletic’s Meg Linehan. The Spirit said they have started the search for a new head coach.
