Restore democracy in Burma: Committee

Imphal, August 08 2021: While observing the 33rd anniversary of 8888 Burma (now Myanmar) Uprising, Solidarity Committee for Burma Democracy, Manipur has demanded the military junta to stop its atrocities and restore democracy in that country.

The observance was held at Irabot Bhavan here on Sunday and was attended by students of Rangoon University.

Speaking in this regard, Committee chairman L Sotinkumar recounted that the 8888 uprising saw the return of democracy in Myanmar under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi.

However, the Myanmar military carried out a coup on February 1 this year, throwing the whole country in chaos and resulting in death of thousands of civilians till date.

More than 10 lakh people have fled their homes to neighbouring countries following the military coup.

Condemning the military junta, So tinkumar said that the Committee-will extend its support in helping to restore democracy in Myanmar.

In his speech, Committee convenor Kshetrimayum Santa said that the ASEAN countries as well as India need to prevail upon the United Nations Security Council for restoring democracy in Myanmar.

He then appealed to the international community to impose a global arms embargo on the Myanmar military, while also urging for humanitarian intervention in the matter.

The observance was attended by CPI-M Secretariat member Sarat Salam, CPI-M leader Haobam Roben and CPU Imphal West secretary Thiyam Megha.
