PM Narendra Modi today chaired UNSC debate on 'Enhancing Maritime Security' via video conferencing. He became the first Indian PM to preside over a UNSC open debate. PM Modi called oceans the world's 'shared heritage' and described maritime routes as 'the lifelines of international trade.' Prime Minister Modi further put forth 5 basic principles for maritime security at the open debate. He urged free maritime trade sans barriers so as to establish legitimate trade and peaceful settlement of maritime disputes on the basis of international law only.
