The first week of The Block was certainly eventful, with twins Josh and Luke Packham being accused of cheating for getting a builder to help paint their house.

The ensuing scandal highlighted the show's little-known rule that all painting must be done by the contestants themselves, not by tradies.

But that isn't the only law of The Block, according to Domain, as there are in fact 10 'key rules' all teams must follow that are rarely discussed on camera.

First and foremost, the teams can't receive help from any outside designer.

This rule has been brought up in previous seasons when contestants have been accused of copying designs from Instagram.

Secondly, the Blockheads must do all the painting themselves - a rule Josh and Luke broke during their first week on site.

The 10 rules of The Block

These rules, reported via Domain, must be followed by teams at all times

  • No help from any outside designer
  • All painting must be done by contestants
  • All trades must be paid the award rate
  • All trades must be inducted
  • No more than 50 per cent discount on any trades goods
  • No working ahead
  • No power tools after tools down
  • No power tools on Sunday or public holidays
  • Contestants must hire their own trades

All trades must be paid the award rate, all trades must be inducted, and there can be no more than 50 per cent discount on any trades goods.

The teams also can't work ahead - meaning they must stick to the areas allocated that week - and power tools can't be used after tools down.

Power tools are also prohibited on Sunday and public holidays.

Finally, the contestants must hire their own trades.

However, there is one exception to this last rule: when a team pulls the 'hipages lever', host Scott Cam arranges for an army of trades to help them get the job done.

There's also a rule for builders on The Block: they can't work on two seasons in a row.

Josh and Luke were the talking point of Sunday's premiere, after Kirsty Lee Akers accused them of breaking the rules when she heard they'd hired a builder to paint their home.

'Rule number one on The Block is that only contestants can paint,' Kirsty, 32, said.

'That's the one job that we have to do - unfortunately because painting sucks - and I hate painting,' she added, before making her way over to the Packhams.

Standing in the doorway, she said: 'So unfortunately, I've got to be the bearer of bad news. You know the rule is that only contestants can paint?'

'That's the number-one rule on the show,' she added, leaving the twins' builder no choice but to put his paint roller down.

Josh explained he was not impressed that Kirsty went out of her way to dob them in.

'It's not something that Luke and I would usually go and do, go and pull someone up if they're doing the wrong thing,' he said.

'It was as if Kirsty was saying it for our sake, but in her best interest,' he continued.

Luke went on to say they had already paid their workers to stay for an extra few hours but they didn't have anything for them to do.
