Nashik, Aug 9 (UNI) Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal hailed Mahatma Gandhi as the latter launched the Quit India movement on this day in the year 1942.
Also known as August Kranti, this anti-colonial movement gained massive support across length and breadth of then undivided India.
To remember one the vital days in the history of Indian freedom struggle, Mr Bhujbal graced a programme jointly organised by the Freedom Fighters Association and the Hutatma Foundation.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said, “On August 9 of 1942, the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi roared the 'Leave India' movement. On the same day, Gandhiji's mantra 'Karenge Ya Marenge' was in the breath of thousands of youth in the country.”
“The citizens from all over the country joined the agitation which became the main direction of the country's freedom struggle,” remarked Nashik Guardian Minister Bhujbal.
Greeting the freedom fighters, he told, “The 'August Revolution Day' was a new dawn of independence. Gandhiji had appealed that this movement should be done through non-violence. Gandhiji also appealed to the citizens of the country to become a leader, not an activist. This is considered to be the last 'do or die' fight in the freedom struggle.”
“We salute the memories of thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives to bring the light of freedom in the country with the burning torch of revolution in their hands,” he exclaimed.
