RAJKOT: Eight people were crushed to death in their sleep when a truck crashed into their hut in
Gujarat's
Amreli district at around 2.30am on Monday.
The accident took place at Badhada village.
The driver of the truck lost control and ploughed into the roadside hut.
According to the police, five men, one woman and two girls died on the spot while two other children sustained injuries.
The injured were shifted to Amreli civil hospital.
The truck near Badhada village descended from the road and started moving on the wrong side.
The truck rammed into the hut where people were sleeping in open bedsteads.
"The truck first crushed two people. Others started screaming but the driver could not apply the brakes and before other people could have moved to protect themselves, the truck crushed them,” said deputy superintendent of police K J Chaudhari.
The deceased are from one family, including a husband-wife and their two daughters.
The deceased are identified as Viram Rathod (35), Narshi Sankhla (60), Navghan Sankhla (65), Hemraj Solanki (37), Lakshmi Sankhla (30), Sukan Sakhla (13) Puja Sankhla (8) and Lala Rathod (20).
The bodies have been sent to Amreli civil hospital for postmortem.
Truck driver Pravin Parmar has been arrested and booked under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amount to murder).
Chief minister Vijay Rupani expressed his grief over the loss of lives.
He instructed the district administration to provide immediate help to the victims.
The chief minister has also announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased.
