White Sox broadcaster Jason Benetti tests positive for COVID-19
The Chicago White Sox announced Monday that play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti will miss an unspecified number of games after testing positive for COVID-19.
Benetti, who is in his sixth season with the White Sox and third season as the team's main play-by-play announcer, also is a broadcaster for ESPN. According to the club, Benetti is fully vaccinated.
"I'm mildly symptomatic and plan to be back soon," Benetti said on Twitter.
Benetti's most recent assignment was with NBC, working play-by-play of the semifinals and gold-medal games in baseball for the just-concluded Summer Olympics. He fulfilled that role from a studio in Connecticut and was not in Japan.
Benetti, 37, has overcome the physical challenges of cerebral palsy to earn his role with the White Sox. The movement disorder was believed to have been caused by a respiratory illness while he was an infant.
The White Sox announced that Red Sox fill-in announcer Mike Monaco will take over for Benetti and will work alongside longtime analyst Steve Stone.
