PM Modi chairs UNSC debate, says need to settle maritime disputes peacefully

NEW DELHI: PM Modi on Monday chaired a UNSC high-level debate on 'Enhancing Maritime Security - A Case for International Cooperation'. PM Modi thus became the first Indian PM to preside over a UNSC open debate.
During his opening statement, the PM called oceans the world's "shared heritage" & described maritime routes as "the lifelines of international trade. "
Here are the key points from his address:-
*These oceans are very important for the future of our planet. This shared heritage of ours (oceans) is facing several types of challenges. Maritime routes are being misused for piracy and terrorism.
* Any hindrance to maritime trade can hurt global economy.
* For maritime security, I would like to put forth 5 basic principles-
1) Free maritime trade sans barriers so as to establish legitimate trade.
2) Settlement of maritime disputes should be peaceful and on the basis of international law only.
3) Responsible maritime connectivity should be encouraged.
4) The need to collectively combat maritime threats posed by non-state actors and natural calamities.
5) We have to preserve maritime environment and maritime resources.
* India has taken several steps to enhance regional cooperation on maritime security, been first responder in tackling maritime disasters.
*We want to make an inclusive framework on maritime security in our region based on the vision of SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region). This vision is for a safe, secure, and stable maritime domain.
* We must keep in mind fiscal sustainability, capacity of countries while building infrastructure projects to enhance maritime trade.
