VISAKHAPATNAM: In response to a report, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman directed the Andhra Pradesh government on Saturday to include hand-woven Ponduru khadi in the Centre-owned Government e-Market (GeM), a one-stop government e-marketplace hosted by the Director-General of Supplies and Goods (DGS&G) where common user goods and services can be procured.

VISAKHAPATNAM: In response to a report, Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman directed the andhra pradesh government on saturday to include hand-woven Ponduru khadi in the Centre-owned government e-Market (GeM), a one-stop government e-marketplace hosted by the Director-General of Supplies and Goods (DGS&G) where common user goods and services can be procured.

Sitharaman ordered the district collector Srikesh B Lathkar to add pure cotton production to the GeM, a dynamic, self-sustaining and user-friendly portal. She said that the revenue productivity of khadi has doubled from Rs 9,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 18,000 crores this year. The minister was participating in the 'National Handloom Day' celebrations at Ponduru in the srikakulam district. She urged the locals to increase the number of handloom weavers and be assured of a mega cluster. She also told that she will take up this matter with the textile minister.

The minister also recommended that the collector call a conference with lenders and handloom weavers to figure out how to provide loans to those who qualify. Before the upcoming gandhi Jayanti, the lenders were instructed to raise the loan amount to them by 50%.

Tammineni Sitaram, the speaker of the Assembly, stated that Ponduru and the country share a cultural bond. gandhi used to send his son to Ponduru to inspect the cotton clothing he was wearing.

Dharmana Krishnadas, the deputy chief minister, said that the then-president, Pratibha Patel, had ordered Ponduru sarees. Bill Clinton, the former president of the United States, was also a supporter, he noted.
