Microblogging site Twitter temporarily suspended former Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s account, the party informed on Saturday evening. However, the account has been restored by Twitter.
Shri Rahul Gandhi’s account has been temporarily suspended and due process is being followed for its restoration. Until then, he will stay connected with you all through his other SM platforms & continue to raise his voice for our people & fight for their cause. Jai Hind!, said Congress in a tweet.
This came a day after the social media giant removed a photo posted by Gandhi revealing the identity of the family of the 9-year-old Dalit girl who was raped and murdered in Delhi Cantonment area by a priest and his three companions on Sunday and and whose body was forcibly cremated by her perpetrators, triggering massive protests.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had asked Twitter India’s resident grievance officer to remove the photo as it reveals the identity of the nine-year-old girl.
According to the social media giant, an account is locked if it violates Twitter rules or appears to be compromised. “We may ask you to complete certain actions before we start the countdown on your limited state,” the company says. “These actions may include verifying your email address, adding a phone number to your account, or deleting Tweets that are in violation of our rules.”
Indian Express reported that the Congress accused the Modi government of intimidating the micro blogging site, instead of ensuring justice to the Dalit girl’s family. Based on a complaint by the BJP, the Twitter account of Rahul Gandhi has been locked, party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said.
The move came shortly after Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Sambit Patra criticised Rahul Gandhi for revealing the identity of the Dalit family. This is using Dalits and the poor for furthering your own political agenda, Patra claimed.
