India is currently in a celebratory mood as athletes have created some major records at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Thanks to Neeraj Chopra's historic win, the country's national anthem will be played at the medal ceremony for the first time since Beijing Olympics that took place in 2008. Chopra scripted history by winning a gold medal in men's javelin throw in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra was born in Khandra village of Haryana. A son of a farmer, Chopra developed an early skill in sports. His father enrolled him in a gym at Panipat in Haryana. He was also frequent at the nearby Panipat Sports Authority of India center, where a javelin thrower named Jaiveer Singh recognised his early talent at the sport.

Observing his ability to achieve a 40-metre throw without training, Jaiveer began to coach him.

After being trained by Jaiveer for a year, Chopra started his training under coach Naseem Ahmad, who made him train in long-distance running along with the javelin throw.

Neeraj Chopra first threw at a maximum of 55 metres. But he increased his range. He won the 2012 junior nationals in Lucknow by achieving a new national record throw of 68.40 metres. Just next year, Chopra entered his first international competition, the World Youth Championships in Ukraine.
