India vs England (IND vs ENG) 1st Test: Day five of India vs England was abandoned due to rain and the first match of WTC23 ended in a draw on Sunday.

Persistent rain proved to be anti-climactic as India, who had a realistic shot at victory in the series-opener, were forced to share points with England after entire fifth day’s play was washed out. India needed to score 157 runs on the final day but the rain did not allow a single ball. As part of the new World Test Championship cycle, both India and England log home four points each.

Earlier, chasing a total of 209, India got off to a good start in the run chase despite losing the wicket of KL Rahul for 26. India need 157 more runs on Day 5 with nine wickets in hand.

On Day 4, England skipper Joe Root led from the front with a superb counter-attacking hundred but Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul on the fourth day made India favourites to chase down the tricky target. It was Root’s 21st Test hundred — a masterful 109 off 172 balls, that saw England put up a much-improved batting show, scoring 303 in 85.5 overs. In the time left during the penultimate hour, India scored 52 for one with Stuart Broad dismissing KL Rahul (26 off 38 balls) with a beauty. Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara were unbeaten on 12 each. However, persistent rain dashed all hopes of a result on Sunday.

Virat Kohli at post-match presentation

'We thought we had a chance right in front of us. We were on top in the game after batting and bowling well. It's a shame we couldn't complete Day Five. On day five we knew we had our chances. We certainly felt like we were on top of the game. Getting that lead was crucial, but it's a shame we couldn't finish day five.'

India vs England 1st Test: Match drawn

Day 5 abandoned due to rain, match ends in a draw. No play is possible on Day 5 at Trent Bridge as rain has the final say. England and India will go again in the second Test at Lord's from Thursday. A very frustrating day for cricket fans. Should the ICC initiate reserve days for all test matches, not just the WTC final? a lot of positives for India to take especially with the seam bowling department which snared 20 English wickets. James Anderson and Ollie Robinson too look in fine form and it does seem like pacers will play a significant role going forward.

India vs England Live: As things stand

England desperately needed something to show for its time in the field and, after 10 wicketless overs, Broad provided it with a teaser that tempted Rahul in and took his edge. Cheteshwar Pujara survived a bat-pad scare moments before the close as he and Rohit Sharma survived for stumps.

India vs England Live: Hello and welcome

Joe Root struck a classy captain's century to keep England alive in the first test against India on Saturday and tee up a potentially thrilling day-five finale at Trent Bridge. India had an hour to respond to England's much-improved 303 all out, losing KL Rahul to a wicked delivery from Stuart Broad but chipping a useful 52 off their chase to leave another 157 required. Stay tuned for live updates of Day 5.

Joe Root drove Shardul Thakur past mid-on and let out his emotions. His batting form had dipped since mid-February. His captaincy has been under the scanner. At the pre-match press conference, Root was asked about if the next 10 Tests – five against India followed by five in the Ashes – could determine his captaincy future. The England captain didn’t brush aside the question and sort of agreed that the results in the two high-profile series might have a bearing. Then again, he is not an average Joe and his masterclass gave his team a chance at Trent Bridge.

Root’s 21st Test century, his first in England in three years, was one of the best of his 106-game career. For the first time in four days, the sun shone unfettered and play was uninterrupted. The pitch and conditions became easier for batting. But Root was up against a top-class Indian pace attack spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, who bagged a five-for in England’s second innings to announce his return to form after the World Test Championship (WTC) final lull. The hosts posted 303 in their second innings to give India a victory target of 209. Root scored 109 of those runs.

It was a gripping day of Test cricket; a day which in Indian sporting context belonged to Neeraj Chopra. Not often does an India-England game gets overshadowed by other sports events, but 87.58m has now been etched in sporting history.

From England’s point of view, however, Root held the key to the day. At 46/2 and trailing by 95 runs on first innings, trouble beckoned. After a streaky four against Bumrah to get off the mark, Root steadily grew into the game. A stiff breeze was blowing across the ground and Mohammed Siraj was getting his inswingers going. England’s batting talisman attested his intent with a couple of gorgeous boundaries against the bowler. Back-to-back fours off Mohammed Shami were even better. Root was taking the game to India.

Virat Kohli tried to keep his opposite number off strike and attack the dour Dom Sibley. The ploy nearly worked. For a while, Root’s batting became a little twitchy. He regained his rhythm by hitting a four off Shami that also took him to his half-century.

Kohli versus James Anderson is not the only subplot of the series. This is also Root’s challenge to go shoulder to shoulder with his ‘Fab Four’ mates – Kohli, Kane Williamson and Steve Smith. This was his 10th Test hundred as England skipper. Only Peter May, Graham Gooch and Alastair Cook are ahead of him.  [Read More]
