Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay' occupies a special place in Bollywood for reinventing the whole genre of 'masala' films. Even today, 46 years after its release, it retains its appeal across an audience of all age groups. The film, a cult classic about revenge and redemption, had Jai and Veeru as the main characters. Although, we bet you didn't that the character of Jai was originally supposed to be played by Shatrughan Sinha. However, due to many reasons, including Amitabh Bachchan asking Dharmendra to put in a good word for him, Shatrughan wasn't hired. In an old interview, Dharmendra admitted to playing a pivotal role in the hiring of Amitabh Bachchan and said that he was talking about it publicly only because Amitabh himself had thanked him. He had said, 'I've never spoken about this, but since Amitabh has started saying that I helped him get the role, I'll say it: yes, I did help him get the role. He used to come to me... But originally, the role was going to go to Shatrughan Sinha.' He went on to say that Sinha even approached him to ask him why he had suggested Bachchan for the role, and he had told him, 'Yaar, kuch samajh nahi aata, woh pehle aaya, socha chalo bechare ko de do.'
