Social media exploded after the Springboks clinched the British & Irish Lions series 2-1 with victory in the third Test in Cape Town thanks to Morne Steyn's boot and wing Cheslin Kolbe's brilliance.

Kolbe scythed through two Lions defenders to score South Africa's only try, while flyhalf Steyn slotted two penalties to give the Boks a historic 19-16 victory.

Irish back Rob Kearney, who toured with the Lions in 2009 to South Africa and in 2013 (Australia) was as stunned as many that history repeated itself when Steyn lined up to kick the series-winning penalty, as he did 12 years go at Loftus.

"Steyn….. 12 years later - you gotta be joking me!!" Kearney posted on twitter.

The Lions official account congratulated the Boks on their hard-fought famous victory at the end of a three-Test battle that was filled with drama and controversy, on and off the field.

"Congratulations @Springbokson your victory in the #CastleLionsSeries. Always such tough opponents, we’re already looking forward to coming back," the Lions posted.

From the ones of a quirkier variation, one person posted this gem: "The more things change, the Morne Steyn the same."

Springbok and Cheetahs flank Oupa Mohoje also paid Steyn a massive compliment, calling him a "cheat code" after the flyhalf's heroics.

Former Springbok wing Breyton Paulse couldn't hide his delight at Kolbe's decisive score, saying: "Rugby fans can we make some noise for KING KOLBE!!! I thank you."
