Coronavirus LIVE Updates | Over 2 lakh challans issued by Delhi Police between April 19-Aug 6 for Covid violations

The Delhi Police has issued over two lakh challans between April 19 and August 6 this year to those found violating Covid guidelines in the national capital, according to official data. The maximum challans during this period were issued for face mask violation. According to the data shared by Additional Delhi Police PRO Anil Mittal, 2,00,691 challans were issued between April 19 and August 6 for various Covid violations. Of them, 1,69,659 challans were issued to those not wearing mask, 26,744 to those found violating social distancing norms, 1,842 for consumption of liquor, pan, gutkha, etc, 1,562 for holding large public gatherings or congregations and 884 for spitting, the data showed. On Friday, the police issued challans to 1,072 people for not wearing mask, 215 for violating social distancing norm, two for holding large public gatherings or congregations, 22 for spitting and 91 for consumption of liquor, oan, gutkha, tobacco etc.

There were growing questions and anger within the Opposition party ranks on Saturday over UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to not self-isolate following an aide’s positive COVID-19 test. Downing Street said the UK Prime Minister will not follow the government's 10-day quarantine guidance for people who come in close contact with someone who goes on to test positive for COVID-19 after a staffer’s positive test following a visit to Scotland. The visit, earlier this week, is said to have been carried out in line with COVID protocols, and it is also claimed that Johnson has not been in close contact with the positive case. However, according to the ‘Guardian’, a senior government source told the newspaper that Johnson and the official in question were “side-by-side” on several occasions. "The Prime Minister regularly visits communities across the UK and all aspects of visits are carried out in line with COVID guidance,” a Downing Street spokesperson said. "The Prime Minister has not come into close contact with anyone who has tested positive," the spokesperson said. But the Opposition Labour Party accused Johnson of "cooking up a reason to be above the rules". 

Coronavirus LIVE Updates | Allow malls, markets to operate till 10 pm: traders' body to DDMA

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) on Saturday urged the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to allow malls and markets to operate till 10 pm. These markets are presently allowed to operate till 8 pm. In its letter to DDMA, the CTI said there is "still no demand for extension of time in the wholesale markets but traders of retail markets want that the opening time should be increased from 8 pm to 10 pm". "There are many festivals -- Hariyali Teej, Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami -- coming up in the month of August. In this, the traders are feeling the possibility of getting business up, but the permission to open shops till 8 pm is proving to be insufficient," said CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal in a statement.

Odisha on Saturday reported 1,096 new COVID-19 infections, pushing the tally to 9,85,827, while the toll climbed to 6,366 with 64 more fatalities, a health department official said. Of the 1,096 new cases, 637 were recorded in quarantine centres, and the rest detected during contact tracing, the official said. Khurda district, of which state capital Bhubaneswar is a part, registered 389 cases, Cuttack at 92 and Balasore at 77. Boudh and Nabarangpur districts did not report any new case. Khurda also logged 27 fresh deaths, followed by Cuttack at 17.
