Beauty Knowhow: Summer’s best-dressed make-up
Introducing the super-glamorous new ranges from four of my favourite fashion brands

Recently I wrote about new fragrance releases from fashion houses, but now that the designer clothing world is increasingly turning its attention to launching make-up ranges, drum roll… Maison Valentino has entered the arena and is going gangbusters on the glamour front. It’s almost a bit 1980s retro, it feels so swanky. There’s the Magnificent Mascara (£28) which, like the whole range, looks glam on the outside in the brand’s shades of red and gold, while the inside delivers a boost of volume – nothing too dramatic, more of a stylish amping up. The Rosso Valentino Lipstick (£40, pictured in shade 22R) has a hydrating satin finish and gives good colour. Plus it’s refillable with a wide choice of shades. The Go-Clutch (£176, all valentino-beauty.co.uk) is a handy on-the-go bronzer which also contains a miniature lipstick in a shade of your choice. For added oomph, it has a detachable gold chain ‒ long enough to wear across your body so all you’ll need for a night out is a bank card and/or your phone. It’s all very ‘holiday on a superyacht’ vibe, but the quality is good, too.

Christian Louboutin has launched its first palettes with the studded Abracadabra La Palette: choose from three six-colour eyeshadows (£58 each, pictured in Rose Pigalle, all selfridges.com) or two highlighting trios. The compacts are refillable and come with a chic miniature tool that has a handle shaped like the brand’s signature red shoe sole to push out the empty pans.

La Perla has also moved into cosmetics and I’m hugely impressed by the results. So far, the focus is on refillable lip products: a Matte Silk Lipstick (£47) and, my favourite, a pigmented but nourishing Satin Lip Balm (£45, pictured in Petal Lips, all beautybylaperla.com). The refills will launch next month alongside an excellent volumising mascara, brow gel and liquid liner. Packaging is elegant, too, with an environmental conscience.

A few months ago Zara launched its beauty range offering great quality at affordable prices; it’s mostly refillable too. The Eyeshadow Palettes (£17 each, pictured in H Out, all zara.com) have become one of my most used, and the Nail Polishes come in a myriad of shades (£5.99 each, pictured in B-A-B-Y).
