Canadian becomes first out trans athlete to win Olympic medal
You can play. You can succeed. You can thrive. You can belong.
Canada midfielder Quinn, one of the first openly transgender athletes to compete at an Olympic Games, is now a gold medallist. The shootout victory over Sweden on Friday night was a huge moment for them and Canada, the team’s first title at the Olympics or World Cup.

But it was an even bigger moment for inclusion. There can be acceptance. There can be joy. There can be room on the world’s biggest stage.
“That’s such a huge thing for me, just making sure kids know that they have a place in this sport,” Quinn said after the game, light glinting off the gold medal around their neck. Quinn uses gender-neutral pronouns and goes by a mononym, which is their surname.
“Sports bring me so much joy, so hopefully I can pass that message along and be a role model for younger folks, seeing that they can be themselves and they can also have a place here and they can be Olympic champions.
“So I think that’s really exciting.“

Men’s basketball final is on
In case you’re not in lockdown and glued to Seven like I am, you might have missed the start of the men’s basketball final - it’s the United States vs France. Get on it.
France has started brightly - at time of writing they’re up 7-4 - but so did the Boomers the other day, and we know how that worked out.
By the way - the fact that this gold medal match is on right now, before the bronze, tells you everything you need to know about how much power NBC, the American television network, holds over the IOC.
Green still a shot at bronze
By Malcolm Knox
After a two-metre par saver at 12, Hannah Green has holed a birdie putt from similar distance at 13 to close the gap a little on the bronze medal position.
Green is now 10-under par, while her playing partners Mone Inami of Japan and Emily Pederson of Denmark are now in second and third place at 14 and 13 under respectively.
Nelly Korda has steadied at the top and leads Inami by two.
Update: And now an eagle for Hannah Green at the 14th to move into sixth spot, three shots out of the medals. This featured a terrific approach from 160m out of heavy rough, then a seven-metre sliding left to right putt. Three one-putts in the last three holes helps!
Unfortunately Minjee Lee’s round has finished - she’s also done for these Games, tied for 29th, after a score of 68 today (3 under).

Italian 100m champion’s nutritionist under investigation
By Sarah Keoghan
The former sports nutritionist of Lamont Marcell Jacobs, who won gold in the 100m sprint, is now the subject of a police investigation into the illegal distribution of anabolic steroids.
The Times is reporting Giacomo Spazzini, a professional bodybuilder who credited himself for playing a part in the gold medal win, is now the subject of a police probe into fraud and other allegations.

Jacobs’ manager has since defended his client, saying the Olympian split with the nutritionist in March upon learning about the allegations.
Jacobs won the 100m on Sunday with a European record of 9.80 sec. He also won gold as part of the Italian 4x100m men’s relay team.
There is no suggestion Jacobs has failed any drug test.
Aussie diver on track for final
They’re through the first three of six rounds at the Olympic pool for the men’s 10m platform semi-final, and Australian Cassiel Rousseau is in decent shape.
He’s earned 221.55 points and looks comfortably on track for a top 12 finish - that’s what’s required to make the final from this field of 18.

The final, if he makes it, is slated for 4pm today.
Green birdies to open her back nine
By Malcolm Knox
Maybe Hannah Green is about to get moving: she has just rolled in a five-metre putt for her first birdie of the day at the par-3 tenth hole.
She’s still six off the lead, and an outside chance of a medal with eight holes to go. American Nelly Korda is back on top at 17-under after three birdies to bounce back from her horror show on the seventh, with Denmark’s Emily Kristine Pedersen, India’s Aditi Ashok and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko tied for second, three shots adrift.

No Bogut on the mic tonight
If you were expecting to hear more insightful commentary from Andrew Bogut on Seven tonight when the Boomers face Slovenia for a bronze medal at 9pm, we’ve got some bad news.
Bogut has announced he won’t be part of the coverage team because his contract has expired and it was only five games long.
Not sure what Seven would have done if the Boomers had beaten the USA and made the gold medal match. But that’s a real shame. He’s been great.
Men’s kayakers also into final
Australia will get a second crack at the medals today in the kayak sprint. Lachlan Tame, Riley Fitzsimmons, Murray Stewart and Jordan Wood have just finished second in their semi-final of the 500m event.
They were half a second behind the winners, Spain. The final is coming up at 1.37pm.
An update on the golf
By Malcolm Knox
It hasn’t been quite happening for Australia’s Hannah Green in the final round of the women’s golf at Kasumigaseki Country Club.
After eight holes, Green is one over par for the day - but she has just got closer to the lead after a sensation at the par-3 seventh, where US world number one Nelly Korda just coughed up her two-stroke advantage by getting too cute with a chip onto the green, seeing it roll back to her feet… and then doing it again.
Korda’s double-bogey five puts her into a three-way tie at 14-under with New Zealand star Lydia Ko and the surprise package, Indian world number 200 Aditi Ashok.
Green is five behind, while Australia’s Minjee Lee is 12 off the lead at 2-under with four holes to play.

By Sarah Keoghan
The Australian women’s kayak four are through to the 500m final after placing fourth in their semi-final group.
Jaime Roberts, Jo Brigden-Jones, Shannon Reynolds and Catherine McArthur qualified by just 0.03 seconds to beat out France for a spot in the final.
