New Delhi, Aug 7 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday congratulated athlete Neeraj Chopra and boxer Bajrang Punia on winning gold medal and bronze medal, respectively, at Tokyo Olympics.
Indian track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra scripted history by winning a gold medal in the men's javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Chopra, who is also a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army, today became the second individual Indian athlete after Abhinav Bindra to win a gold medal at the Olympic games. Bindra had bagged a gold in the shooting during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Notably, this gold medal is also the country's first Olympic medal in track-and-field events.
Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia clinched the bronze medal after defeating Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan in the men's freestyle 65kg category play-off match.
In his message, Mr Birla said, 'Neeraj Chopra has finally given the golden moment to India for which everybody was waiting. His gold medal in Javelin throw reflects the capability of our youth who make the impossible a possible through Sankalp Se Siddhi. Many many Congratulations.'
Congratulating Bajrang Punia, the Lok Sabha Speaker said, 'Congratulations to Wrestler Shri Bajrang Punia on winning the Bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics. He fulfilled the dreams and aspirations of Indians and made the country proud. His accomplishment is a matter of national celebration and I am sure his win will inspire other sportspersons on the path of victory.'
Mr Birla said that the achievements of Neeraj Chopra and Bajrang Punia in the Tokyo Olympics will inspire other sportspersons on the path of victory.
