Hyderabad: Police hold talks with religious leaders over Muharram arrangements

Hyderabad: Anjani Kumar, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner, held a meeting with Islamic religious leaders on Friday to discuss the arrangements to be made for the coming Muharram.

The meeting was held in the Salar Jung Museum here in Hyderabad.

Addressing the media here, the Hyderabad Police Commissioner said: ‘A meeting was held to discuss arrangements to be made for the coming Muharram in the Salar Jung Museum here in Hyderabad.

He added that the Muharram is a 400-year-old tradition commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the son of Hazrat Ali and the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. It indicates an expression of sadness over the martyrdom of Imam Hussein during the Battle of Karbala that took place more than 14 centuries ago.

Muharram is more relevant in modern times as the battle between good and evil as well as between justice and injustice is eternal, he added.

The march takes place every year in the first month of the Islamic calendar on the tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura.

Like many other religious events this year, it also took place amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
