Kitchen is the heart of every home and, decluttering it works wonders to make your life easier. Follow these top 10 tips to declutter your kitchen.
The kitchen is the heart of every home. Our kitchen surfaces usually are packed with appliances, thousands of mugs, and extra utensils. And this clutter affects us in various ways. It can cause us to overeat and make impulse purchases.
It’s important to get your kitchen in order. It is simply a matter of being practical and realistic. If you live in a tiny apartment or small home, there’s a good chance you have a small kitchen.
Even some larger apartments and houses face this challenge. A primary organizational guideline for a small kitchen is to reduce down belongings just to the essentials.
Follow the simple tips to declutter your kitchen:
1. Appliances: Kitchen appliances and gadgets make cooking tasks easier. But if you have a small space in a kitchen, they can be more trouble! While deciding appliances and gadgets you need, always consider the cooking tasks that can be done with another tool you have. Repair any broken appliance you have stored for very long. Hence, either you will be able to use it or donate it.
2. Tableware: Women love to shop for tableware and crockery sets! To keep your kitchen clutter-free, keep plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, and utensils you need. Tableware is also given as gifts and souvenirs but may end up crowding the cupboards. If you host an occasional gathering, you can always borrow extra tableware if required.
3. Positioning of food: Position your food in a way so that it’s visible to the naked eye. We usually end up buying a whole bunch of new ingredients only to realize later that you had several of the items in your cupboard already. Place food items together in a neat basket from where you can lift them easily. Baskets/organizers can be used for storing food in both the fridge and cupboard.
4. Multi-purpose pots and pans: The number of pots and pans you need differs depending on how frequently you cook, cooking style, size of the family, etc. Even then, you will need fewer pots and pans than you might stock up. Hence, select only a few multi-purpose pots and pans in medium and large sizes, which should be versatile enough to meet the most common cooking needs.
5. Limit Bulky Items: Many kitchen items are decorative and bulky which won’t fit in a small kitchen. For example, an amusing or comic character cookie jar can be a nice touch in a large kitchen but it eats up precious space in a small kitchen. You can use cool magnets on the fridge and wall art to decorate the kitchen without poaching space.
6. Culinary Strengths: Keep items for what you cook now and not for what you dream of learning to cook someday! For example, investing in a muffin tray that you will never bake. Avoid hoarding such items which will clutter your kitchen. You always can borrow special cooking items as required.
7. The basket under the sink to store cleaning products: Under the sink storage can easily go from being clutter-free to disorganized. Attach a small basket to the inside of the cabinet door using damage-free picture hanging strips to keep things in order. You can store items like sponges, liquid soap, garbage bags, and other everyday objects.
8. Use Trays to keep countertops organized: Some people like to keep the top of their kitchen counter bare. Those surfaces can be used for kitchen organization opportunities. Instead of keeping your countertops looking polished and neat, use trays and stands to organize different groupings. For example, in your kitchen, you can organize all the coffee items on one tray and fruit can sit on another tray.
9. Divide and store: Divide the inside of drawers into sections. It may seem easy to throw all your container lids inside a drawer and call it a day! Prevent this kind of mess by sectioning off the inside of your drawer and organizing the containers by size using drawer dividers.
10. Clear out food you don’t need: If you have a small kitchen, you probably don’t have many cabinets. This means you’ll be storing food in your cupboards. Check all of your food regularly to make sure it’s not expired. Toss out anything inedible or expired and donate good food that you don’t plan to eat. This will prevent food items from unnecessarily cluttering.
