AMRITSAR: Is the last-minute cancellation of the scheduled visit of a delegation of Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) which comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) at Dera Baba Nanak (DBN) Integrated Check Post (ICP) an indication of the possible opening of the Indian side of Kartarpur Corridor?
According to highly placed sources, a delegation of LPAI led by its director Raman Kumar Sharma was scheduled to visit DBN ICP on Saturday to inspect the ICP and discuss the technical modalities for the possible opening of the Indian side of Kartarpur Corridor. It has been closed since March 16, 2020 to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
“The scheduled meeting which was to be held among the officials of various departments including Border Security Force, Customs, police and civil administration of Gurdaspur has not been canceled but postponed," said a senior source privy to the arrangements of the meeting.
Sources said that there had not been any official word with regards to the opening of the Indian side of the corridor so far.
Given the fact that Sikh bodies including Akal Takht, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) as well as Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and its parent body Evacuee Trust Property Board had been time and again making appeals to the Indian government for the opening of Kartarpur Corridor, the sources said that Center government might decide to open the corridor for few days if not permanently which has more political reasons than just preventing Covid spread.
Notably, the Indian and Pakistani prime ministers Narendra Modi and Imran Khan had respectively inaugurated their corresponding side of the Kartarpur corridor on November 9, 2019.
On March 16, 2020 both countries temporarily suspended the day-long pilgrimage in wake of Covid 19 and also suspended the registration for the Kartarpur Sahib pilgrimage.
On October 2, 2020, the Pakistan government announced to unilaterally open the Kartarpur Sahib pilgrimage but India denied to reciprocate the gesture.
However when contacted Sharma said “There was no scheduled meeting with regards to the opening of the Kartapur corridor but it was a routine visit that was postponed due to our other commitments”.
