One fifth of all UK COVID hospital admissions are now from people aged 18-34, which is four times higher than in the peak last winter, as reported in the BBC.
In her first major interview, NHS Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard told the BBC that roughly 1,000 young adults were currently “really unwell” in hospital.
These figures demonstrate the power of the vaccines, and is more of a reason for young and unvaccinated people to come forward and get their jabs.
Amanda Pritchard told the BBC: “It shows how effective the vaccine programme has been in protecting people, stopping them needing hospitalisation, keeping them safe.”
She warned that young people who have not been jabbed could become seriously ill, adding, they “are not immune and the best way they can protect themselves absolutely is to get that vaccine if they haven’t already”.
In a statement issued by NHS England, she added: “NHS teams are putting on pop-up clinics and walk-in centres in addition to around 1,600 permanent sites, to make it as easy as possible to protect yourself, your family and your friends.”
About 73% of adults in the UK have now received two doses, and nearly 89% have had a first dose.
It was announced this week that all 16 to 17-year-olds will be offered the vaccine in the coming weeks.
Positive COVID cases have continued to fall in the UK, but there are still a significant amount of people unwell with COVID in hospitals, meaning there is still pressure on the NHS.
