Continental, Siemens tie-up for overhead electric lines at highways

News  /   July

Frankfurt, Germany

Continental Engineering Services (CES), and Siemens Mobility will collaborate in the development and production of current collectors for trucks, called pantographs.

Continental Engineering Services (CES) is Continental’s development and production service provider.  The aim is to electrify key sections of the highway network with an overhead line system, and thus significantly reduce CO2 emissions from trucks, in line with EU regulation 2019/1242. CES and Siemens Mobility aim to make the truck overhead line system available across Europe.

Both companies are now pooling their expertise in order to achieve volume production of current collectors quickly, thus making them available for widespread use in Europe.

The e Highway technology supplies trucks with electric drives (e.g., hybrid, fuel cell, or battery-powered electric trucks) on heavily frequented stretches of highway via an overhead cable. Trucks can drive completely electrically while also charging their batteries without consuming fuel.

Christoph Falk-Gierlinger, Managing Director, CES, said that, they are transferring the principle of rail electrification to the road and the current collectors would be developed and produced in accordance with automotive standards. He added that the partnership between Continental Engineering Services and Siemens Mobility is a major step toward climate-neutral freight transport.

In Germany, the e Highway from Siemens Mobility is currently being tested on three public field trials.

Continental develops pioneering technologies and services for sustainable and connected mobility of people and their goods. Founded in 1871, the technology company offers safe, efficient, intelligent and affordable solutions for vehicles, machines, traffic and transportation.

Founded in 2006, Continental Engineering Services (CES) has evolved into an agile and flexible engineering services and component manufacturing partner for the automotive and other industries including railway, aeronautics, marine, mining and smart cities.
