After Indian women Hockey team loses semi final match to Argentina in Tokyo Olympics, a shocking incident took place in Haridwar where India’s Olympic star Vandana Katariya’s family was harassed and castiest slurs were hurled against them by a few upper caste men.
As per reports, just after India lost to Argentina in Tokyo, a few upper caste men started bursting crackers outside Katariya’s home at Roshnabad village in Haridwar and mocked the family shouting casteist slurs and saying that Indian team lost match since it has too many Dalit players.
Vandana’s family reported the matter to the local police, which later detained one of the two accused. Narrating the whole incident to the police, Katariya’s brother Shekhar said the family is extremely proud of the Indian women’s hockey team’s fighting spirit.
In his complaint, Shekhar told police that soon after the match they used caste slurs, insulted their family and said the Indian team lost because too many Dalits have made it to the team. They went on saying that it’s not just hockey but every sport that should keep Dalits out, the complaint said. Then, they took some of their clothes off and started dancing again. It was a caste-based attack.
The SHO of Sidcul police station, LS Butola said one of the two men has been detained. He confirmed that the police have received the complaint from the Katariya family and they are investigating the matter.
