GREATER NOIDA: A woman from
Dadri has alleged that she was given
triple talaq over phone by her
husband who remarried without informing her.
Nine people, including the woman’s husband and
mother-in-law have been
booked in the case
Imrana (22) married Chand Mohammed, from
Bulandshahr, in early May 2019 and on May 14, she returned to her parents’ house after Chand said he wanted to leave for Dubai.
Later, he returned from Dubai and allegedly married another woman without informing Imrana. Imrana’s family members have said they had already given Rs 2.5 lakh in cash, more than 163 gm of silver and 28 gm of gold, along with other valuables, during the wedding.
According to Imrana, soon after that, her mother-in-law Samina, brothers-in-law Liyaqat, Bhoora, Abid and Muzammil, and sisters-in-law Salma, Hina and Nagma started asking for Rs 5 lakh and a Bullet bike.
“They would say they got unlucky with me as any other woman could bring Rs 20 lakh in
dowry. Since your father cannot fulfil our demand, we will get you triple talaq, they told me,” Imrana has said in her
police complaint.
When she shared this with Chand, he allegedly told her that if she wanted to stay with him, she would have to meet their demands.
But later, Imrana and her family came to know that Chand had married another woman. Chand allegedly gave triple talaq to Imrana over phone on July 11.
The family suspects he remarried with help from his uncle Ali Mohammed. The youth and his family members have also allegedly threatened Imrana’s family with dire consequences.
The nine accused have been booked under IPC sections 498 A, 323 and 506, sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and sections 3 and 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.
Dadri SHO Pradeep Tripathi said action will be initiated against the accused. “The man gave talaq to the woman two years after their wedding. We are probing the case,” he said.
At least eight similar cases have been reported in the district since 2019 when the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, was passed declaring triple talaq illegal.
Any Muslim man who gives triple talaq to his wife can face imprisonment for three years.
