A resolute Indian men's hockey team rewrote history as it claimed an Olympic medal after 41 years, defeating a plucky Germany 5-4 to win the bronze in an edge-of-the-seat play-off match. Vinesh Phogat suffered a massive upset defeat at the Olympic Games after being pinned by Belarus' Vanesa Kaladzinskaya in the 53kg quarterfinals. Young Anshu Malik bowed out of the 57kg competition after losing her repechage round 1-5 to Russia's Valeria Koblova. Ravi Dahiya (57kg) and Deepak Punia (86kg) will fight for gold and bronze medal respectively later in the day. A billion cheers for India. Our men's hockey team has done it. Our men's hockey team dominated and defined their destiny in Olympic history books today. After 40 years they have made a mark they qualified for semifinals and now they have won a bronze. When you win medals you inspire a lot of people to come and play that sport and be a part of the future generations who can win more medals. Many congratulations to the Indian men's hockey team who have won another medal for India and has given 135 crores Indians a reason to be happy. They have also won the hearts of the nation with this performance
This match will be seen as an example in world hockey, I have not seen a match like this for a long time. Coaching centres across the world will make everyone watch this game, the quality of the match was top-notch. After 41 years, we have won a medal. The government showed support towards every sport, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also rallied around the team
I don't know what to say right now, it was fantastic. The effort, the game, we were 3-1 down. I think we deserve this medal. We have worked so hard, the last 15 months were difficult for us also, we were in Bangalore and some of us got COVID also. It was difficult, they got a penalty corner in the last six seconds. We thought we have got to save it with our lives. It is really hard. I am speechless right now. We had a long gap when we didn't get a medal. Now we will get more confidence, yes we can do it. If we can finish on podium in Olympics, we can finish on podium anywhere. We didn't give up. We kept fighting back. It's a great feeling, best feeling. We came here for the gold, we won bronze, it is still a great thing. It's a great moment for all hockey fans

I know that apart from the country, this group has dreamt about a medal for a long time. I know how much it means to India. It's an honour to be able to do that. It's been one of the signatures these guys have tried to develop, to always come back. I asked the guys to bring this to the next level, if something happens, to come back. And they did that very well. There are a number of emotions. This is my fifth Olympic, and it's a huge thing in the world of sport. For me, personally it's a great thing to be able to be involved in. I told the guys (after the semi defeat), that in 1988 we (Australia) came fourth. And it was not a very nice thing. I told them, we can't change that, but we can change the future. And we did that today.
CANOE SPRINT: Australia win men's kayak double 1000m gold
Australia's Jean van der Westhuyzen and Thomas Green won the gold medal in the men's kayak double 1000 metres competition at the Tokyo Olympics. Germany's Max Hoff and Jacob Schopf claimed the silver medal while Czech Republic's Josef Dostal and Radek Slouf took the bronze medal.
That's a great feeling. Best feeling I ever had. We came here for gold, but we won a bronze. That's great too in a big tournament like this. It's a great moment for us and back home. A lot of talks are happening, people are really excited. They were waiting for this, and we won today. I hope hockey will become very popular. It's a great thing. It's been long time. People are forgetting hockey in India. They loved hockey. But they stopped hoping that we will win. But we will win today. They can expect more for us in the future. Keep believing in us. This team has the potential to do more.
