UDUPI: To prevent the public from venturing into the sea, the Malpe Beach Development Committee covered the main portion of the beach with nets on Wednesday. This measure comes after a 20-year-old BSc student from Kodagu, studying in Bengaluru, died after being swept away by large waves. She had visited the beach on Sunday with three of her friends, who were rescued.
Sudesh Shetty, Malpe beach leaseholder, representing Mantra Tourism Development said that the net has been drawn over 1 km, and it is about 5-6ft high. Also, red flags have been put up all over the beach with caution banners, alerting tourists against entering the sea. “A penalty of Rs 500 will be imposed if a tourist breaks the net and enters the sea. Tourists are also being alerted through a public address system,” said Sudesh.
