Covid-19: More than 8 million jabs administered in vaccination drive

More than eight million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered in South Africa as part of its vaccination drive.

According to the Department of Health, 8 182 380 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 185 949 were administered in the last 24-hour cycle.

To date, 1 635 970 people have been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, while 1 691 980 have been vaccinated with the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

South Africa recorded 13 263 new confirmed Covid-19 infections on Wednesday and 423 deaths, bringing the official death toll to 73 415.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 2 484 009 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)… reports that 13 263 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 22.3% positivity rate," the statement read.

As of Wednesday, Gauteng recorded 869 684 confirmed cases of Covid-19, the Western Cape 410 552 and KwaZulu-Natal 402 438.

"The majority of new cases today (Wednesday) are from Western Cape (27%), followed by Gauteng (22%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for (18%); Eastern Cape accounted for 8%; Mpumalanga accounted for 7%; North West accounted for 6%; Free State and Limpopo accounted for 4% each; and Northern Cape accounted for 3% of today's new cases," NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.

The Western Cape recorded 3 587 new cases on Wednesday, Gauteng 2 927 and KwaZulu-Natal 2 408.

There was an increase of 533 hospital admissions in the last 24-hour cycle. In total, 15 629 Covid-19 patients were in both public and private hospitals.

As of Wednesday, South Africa conducted 15 031 457 tests, of which 59 563 were carried out in the last 24-hour cycle.

The recovery rate is 90.9%, which translates to 2 258 603 recoveries.
