WorlPosted at: Aug 5 2021 9:21PM Nasheed to return home next month after treatment for bomb attack injuries
Male, Aug 5 (UNI) Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently in the UK for treatment for injuries sustained in a bomb attack targeting him in May, will return to the country next month, a media report said.
While Nasheed was the target of the attack, investigators have since said that the attackers aimed to kill him. A number of suspects linked to the attack are in police custody, and investigators confirmed that the men support extremist ideologies and deemed Nasheed as an "infidel", raajje.mv reported.
The former president was taken to ADK Hospital immediately after the attack, where he underwent 16 hours of "life-saving" surgery.
Nasheed was flown to Germany for further treatment, and from there to the UK for additional treatment for his injuries. His brother Dr. Ibrahim Nashid revealed that the former president is to return home in September.
Dr. Ibrahim Nashid added his brother is required to change his medication and treatment every week for a total of three weeks, until then.
While speaking at Clubhouse’s ‘Hulhudhoo Voice’ club earlier this week, the former president had announced plans to return to Maldives in September. Nasheed said he wished to come home soon, adding that staying in a foreign country for so long has not been easy.
He also noted that the attack on him was just the beginning of something bigger as he believes that a huge network of people was involved. Nasheed added that he does not believe that authorities have caught all involved in the attack.
Meanwhile, the chair of his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and MP for West-Henveiru constituency Hassan Latheef has asked Nasheed not to make any final decision on returning to Male until the government reveals plans to follow the parliament's recommendation regarding threats to national security.
While the parliament's committee on national security services or the 241 committee conducted an inquiry on how the speaker and former president's security was breached, the 242-page report had a total of 45 submitted recommendations for the government, approved by all members of the committee.
Nasheed was targeted in an assassination attempt on May 6, as he was heading out to attend an event in an island. The attack, which saw a remote-controlled IED explode near his residence in the center of congested Malé City, caused serious injuries to the ex-president who was rushed to the hospital within seven minutes after being knocked to the ground by the powerful blast.
