The tourism ministry of India has put forth a proposal for including tourism in the coexisting list of the constitution, as per a parliamentary standing committee report presented in the parliament on Tuesday.

The tourism ministry has said that it has taken up the issue of including tourism in the concurrent list with the concerned ministry so that tourism can find its place in the ‘national agenda’.

The ministry said that it has requested the ministry of finance to ‘sympathetically consider’ granting an infrastructure status for hotels in cities with a population of up to 5 million instead of the current provision of 1 million for boosting investments in the accommodation sector after industry stakeholders restated this request in a meeting in June this year.

Hotel Association of India (HAI) said that including tourism in the concurrent list will play a vital role in the post Covid revival of the hospitality sector.

“We welcome the initiation of the proposal by the ministry of tourism for including tourism in the concurrent list of the constitution. Tourism activities and products differ from state to state. Placing tourism in the concurrent list will facilitate seamless coordination. This will perhaps increase the quick implementation of schemes,” said HAI in a statement.
