AIZAWL: The Aizawl-based Mizoram Bar Association (MBA) on Tuesday filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in Gauhati High Court on the economic blockade on National Highway 306, the association president and a senior advocate, Anil Rinliana Malhotra, said.
Malhotra said the association had submitted representations to the central and the state governments of Assam and Mizoram to take immediate action to end the blockade along NH 306, the lifeline of Mizoram, but to no avail.
“We were compelled to file the PIL for the sake of the people of Mizoram who are reeling under severe hardship due to the ongoing economic strangulation," he said.
The assocition had filed PIL no. 68 of 2020 in Gauhati High Court when the Assam government had imposed a road blockade for a month last year but the case was dismissed after the blockade was lifted, he said but added that the high court gave the MBA the liberty to file the PIL afresh is such a blockade is clamped again.
“Though the PIL was filed in the Aizawl bench of Gauhati High Court, it is not known whether the case would be tried in the Aizawl bench of the principal bench in Guwahati," he said.
