MUMBAI: Over 80 police personnel from various departments stayed back for 12 hours and scanned through the US consulate premise in Bandra-Kurla Complex (
BKC) after the security officer received a call warning about the security lapse on Tuesday.
The caller also informed that guards come to work “just to eat and to get paid” and are “good for nothing”.
The police team has tracked the caller to Ernakulam in Kerala. The caller has been booked under the Indian Penal Code section 506 (II) for criminal intimidation.
Police suspect that the caller is someone who could have got dejected for his “visa rejection” and have asked the consulate to verify details whether the caller has applied for a “Visa” and whether it was rejected in the last few months.
Initially, the BKC police submitted a special case report to the higher officers and made a diary entry of the incident.
Mumbai police spokesperson,
DCP S Chaitanya said it was a
hoax call.
The security officer received the call at around 11.34 pm and the call lasted for hardly 60 seconds before it got disconnected. “We have asked for the call voice record to verify the exact communication that the security guard had with the caller. Prima facie, the caller told that there is security lapse in the consulate, the security personnel does nothing and comes to eat and collect salary,” said a police officer of the BKC police station.
Around 45 minutes later, the officer at the police control room received a call from the consulate security officer alerting them about the security alert call. The entire forces—Anti-Terrorism Squad (
ATS), Crime Branch,
Special Branch,
Bomb Disposal And Detection Squad (BDDS), sniffer dogs,
State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), BKC police officials and reserve police were pressed into action. “From Tuesday midnight till Wednesday noon, the entire premise was scanned but nothing was found,” said the police.
A case under the Indian Penal Code section 506 (II) (criminal intimidation) has been registered against the caller.
