Leona Maguire hit a level par 71 in the opening round of the women’s Olympic golf tournament at the Kasumigaseki Country club in the searing heat. “I mean this is hot. Teeing off at 7.50am this morning (local time), it was hot. This is a marathon. It isn’t a sprint so making sure the energy levels keep up,” she said. Stephanie Meadow carded a 72 in her first round.
On her Olympic debut 19-year old Tanya Watson qualified for the semi-finals of the women's 10m platform.
Another world record fell in the Olympic Stadium with American Sydney McLaughlin breaking her own world record on her way to winning the gold medal in the women’s 400m hurdles. McLaughlin set a new figure of 51.46. Her American team mate Dalilah Muhammad also broke the old record, winning silver in 51.58.
Later today all eyes will be on Irish showjumpers Cian O’Connor, Bertram Allen and Darragh Kenny, all of whom qualified for the final of the individual event. Kenny will be the second last rider to go which leaves him in an ideal position to challenge for a medal. Together with GB, Sweden and Belgium, Ireland was the only country to get their three riders into the final.
