Chennai, Aug 4 (UNI) A day after the Madras High Court struck down the
Tamil Nadu Gaming and Police Laws (Amendment) Act of 2021, the state
government will bring in a new law to ban online rummy and other online
games in the state.
In a statement here, Law Minister S.Reghupathy said DMK President and
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, when he was the Opposition leader, had sought
a ban on online rummy, following which the AIADMK government had urgently
enacted an amendment to the Act to ban online gaming.
He said though the State government putforth its arguments on why these
online games should be banned, the Court has struck down the amendments
stating that proper reasons were not mentioned on why these games should
be banned.
However, the Court also said that there is no restriction in passing a
new law with proper rules and regulations.
Following this Mr Stalin immediately issued orders to formulate a new law
to prohibit online games in the State.
Mr. Reghupathy said following the verdict, Mr Stalin has issued directions
that public welfare was of utmost importance and hence proper guidelines,
rules and reasons must be framed to ban such online games without any delay.
Based on the Chief Minister’s directions, a new law would be brought in to
ban online rummy and other such games very soon, he said.
