The dark side of Beauty and the Geek: Shy maths teacher Alex Wojno admits he 'struggled' to make friends on the dating show in heartbreaking Q&A

He signed up for Beauty and the Geek in the hope of stepping outside his comfort zone and perhaps even meeting someone special.

But things didn't exactly go to plan for 26-year-old maths teacher Alexander Wojno.

During an Instagram Q&A after Tuesday night's heartwarming finale, Alex admitted his experience on the show was 'honestly a mixed bag'.

The shy educator confessed he struggled to make friends on the program, which is all about socially awkward men coming out of their shell.

'I struggled to make friendships with people,' he said. 'You probably saw how separate I was from everyone else in group situations.'

Alex admitted he struggled to form connections with both the beauties and the geeks, but only had himself to blame.

'I've got more learning to do with how to fit in better, but the show itself was really fun [and there were] great activities,' he said.

Alex found his time on set 'super stressful' because he was always up for elimination, but nonetheless said it was a positive experience.

Shutting down rumours the show was scripted, he explained: 'There was a general structure and script to what happened each day, but conversations between us were not scripted.'

'There was just natural friendship at work,' he added.

Lachlan Mansell and Keira Johnstone were crowned the winners during Tuesday night's finale of Beauty and the Geek.

The pair earned the most votes from the other contestants, ahead of Alexander and Eliza Sowada-Smith, and Josie Werner and George Goldfeder.

The couple broke down in tears as host Sophie Monk announced they'd won the life-changing $100,000 cash prize.
