The Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha informed that the warehouses owned/hired by Food Corporation of India (FCI) are used for storing wheat, rice and paddy and they are not product-specific. However, silos are product specific for wheat and rice.
The minister stated that for the development of silos, the Government of India has made an Action Plan for the construction of steel silos on PPP (Public Private Partnership) mode in the country.
To date Silos with a capacity of 29.75 LMT at various locations throughout the country have been awarded. Out of which a capacity of 10.625 LMT is complete and remaining is under various stages of development.
Further, the High-Level Committee (HLC) in its Meeting dated 16.07.2021 has recommended a total of 249 locations with a capacity of 108.375 LMT under Hub & Spoke mode across the country.
Additionally, in 2007-09, silos at 7 locations with a capacity of 5.50 LMT were constructed under a circuit base model, for bulk storage of wheat.
The ministry lastly said that “as silos are constructed under PPP mode, no funds are sanctioned for the purpose in the State of Gujarat.”
