A Victorian four-wheel driving enthusiast is missing in a remote region of far north Queensland.

Police say Bruce Atkinson was due to arrive at a campsite near the Wenlock River on Cape York on Monday night but failed to show up.

The 63-year-old had been driving in a convoy with a fellow Victorian man when they encountered difficult conditions on Frenchman's Track, between Portland Rd and Pascoe River, about noon.

Mr Atkinson decided to turn around to try to cross the Pascoe River, while his friend drove on.

The pair were aiming to meet at the campsite on Monday night, but Mr Atkinson never showed up and his friend reported him missing to police.

Mr Atkinson was driving a white 2016 Toyota Prado with Victorian registration 1PT40F.

He's Caucasian, about 160cm tall with a solid build and short, grey thinning hair.

A search is underway and police have asked for anyone who has seen Mr Atkinson or his white 4WD to contact them.
