The development comes weeks after U.S based tesla Inc. appealed to the Union government to cut down taxes, and its billionaire chief Elon Musk hinted the possibility of a local factory of tesla in India, once the company starts selling wholly-built units from overseas in the Asian Country.

Minister of State for Heavy industries krishan Pal gurjar on monday told parliament, that the government has no proposal of slashing import duties on electric vehicles is under consideration. Instead, krishan Pal added that the Centre is taking steps to promote electirc cars usage by adding charging stations and lowering domestic taxes.

The reply of Indian lawmakers may be perceived as prime minister Narendra Modi led administration's tough stand to boost local manufacturing. business analysts opine it may also be perceived as tug of war between Modi govt and tesla, which has wrote India for permission to import electric cars more cheaply before setting up a manufacturing plant in the country.

In July, tesla wrote to Transport and industry ministries urging them to slash import duty on electric cars to 40 per cent from current range of 60%-100%, reportedly. Those deterrents to imported electric cars have also turned Maruti Suzuki India, country's top auto-maker that sells every other car on the Indian roads, to think again about uptaking of electric cars in the nation.
