  • All five judges preferred the slicker work of the impressive southpaw Iglesias

Pat McCormack was forced to take silver after a devastating performance from Cuban Roniel Iglesias in the welterweight (63-69kg) final at the Kokugian Arena.

The Washington 26-year-old was outclassed over three rounds and was fortunate to avoid a knockdown in the second.

All five judges handed an entertaining match-up to Iglesias, who was a worthy winner.

The writing was on the wall from the start. McCormick did land with a rapid left-right combo in the first but struggled to exert pressure, and four of the five judges handed the round to the Cuban, who appeared quicker on his feet.

In the second, McCormick was repeatedly warned by the referee for an overly aggressive approach and cut a frustrated figure.

He was also lucky not to have been adjudged to have been knocked down, the referee ruling a slip when he clearly took a shot to the jaw.

All five ruled in Iglesias’s favour to make his task almost impossible. He could not do enough in the final round and was soundly beaten.

McCormack did not have to fight a semi-final after opponent Aidan Walsh was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The Irish fighter sustained an ankle injury during his quarter-final win over Merven Clair of Mauritius on Friday and was ruled out following a scan.

McCormack and twin brother Luke are expected to turn professional after the Games.
