The Cape Cobras have formally been renamed Western Province following South African cricket's domestic restructure.

The local cricket scene will revert back to the old provincial system from the 2021/22 season, replacing the six-team franchise system that had existed since 2004.

"When the new domestic structure was announced, we took all the feedback we received from a number of stakeholders on board and the overwhelming sentiment was there was an emotional connection to the Western Province name," David Brooke, the Western Province Cricket Association's brand and sponsorship manager, said in a statement.

WP will play in the eight-team first division alongside seven other provinces: Boland, Central Gauteng Lions, Eastern Province, KwaZulu-Natal Coastal, North West, Northerns (Titans) and the Knights (Free State indicated they will retain the Knights name).

The second division will consist of Border, Easterns, KwaZulu-Natal Inland, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and South Western Districts.

"[It is] a brand all our diverse cultures could connect with and to bring it back for our new professional team will hopefully attract the older generation back to Newlands and usher in a new generation of supporters to create new memories," Brooke added.

Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that the Cape Town Blitz will become the Western Province Blitz for the country's premier domestic T20 tournament (Mzansi Super League).

"Additionally, the feedback we received also included the view that there was undoubtedly a place for the Blitz brand, which we had built up huge brand equity with during the two years of the Mzansi Super League," Brooke said.

"It was important to build on that momentum we started with on that brand for the premier T20 competition. Therefore, we will be playing as the Western Province Blitz during the Mzansi T20, which means the WP brand will flow throughout all our domestic competitions. This kind of brand extension occurs with a number of county teams in the UK so there is successful precedent for this type of strategy."
