Adam Gemili was left in tears after the Team GB sprinter immediately pulled up with an injury in the men's 200m heat, ending his Tokyo dream in agonising fashion.

The 27-year-old wore heavy strapping on his leg as he lined up for the fourth heat in the sprint event, with the top three qualifying for the semi-finals.

However, the Briton made little more than three strides before pulling up injured as his rivals streamed away from him down the track.

Gemili was inconsolable after the race, revealing he picked up the injury moments before emerging onto the race track,

'My last block start before I went into the cool room, I just felt my hamstring go. I'm in so much pain. I said: "Just strap it up and let me go out there to at least try." Because you have to try.

'I can't believe it, I can't believe this has just happened. I felt like I had such a good chance as well. I've been training so well.

'This season's been really up and down and I'd finally put together five weeks of solid work, I was ready to go out there and win, to try and get a medal, at least a PB. I don't get that chance now. It's the worst feeling in the world.' 

American hotshot Erriyon Knighton, 17, won Gemili's heat with a time of 20.55 seconds, with Panama's Alonso Edward and Belgium's Robin Vanderbemden occupying the other two places. 

It has been an agonising summer for Team GB's top sprinters, with Dina Asher-Smith failing to advance to the women's 100m final last weekend. 

The reigning 200m world champion announced her withdrawal from this week's 200m event in an emotional interview with the BBC following her 100m heartbreak.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Team GB's Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, whose season-best time of 20.56 seconds was not enough to see him advance to the semi finals.
