Miadi Kalan (Amritsar): Crediting drag flicker Gurjit Kaur’s sole goal against Australia on Monday to make place for India in the first-ever women’s hockey Olympic semi-finals, her relatives and residents of her village demanded her appointment as deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in Punjab. At present, Kaur is serving with the Indian railways.
“Gurjit Kaur is posted at Allahabad, she has brought pride to Punjab and we expect Punjab government to appoint her as DSP with the police,” said Baljinder Singh, a relative of Kaur, while talking to TOI on Monday after celebrating her role in India’s victory in the Tokyo Olympics.
Citing an example, he said that the Punjab government had appointed cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur, who earlier served with the railways, as DSP. “Gurjit has brought pride to Punjab and it is the duty of Punjab government to honour her by inducting her as DSP with the police as it appointed Harmanpreet Kaur in sports quota,” he said.
In March 2018, woman cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur, who was also with the railway department, was appointed as DSP with Punjab police.
Agreeing with Baljinder, patron master, Cadre Union, Punjab, Gurpreet Singh Riar said, “She is the daughter of Punjab who has done every Punjabi proud with her accomplishment. She should be given due honour of serving in Punjab.”
He said earlier also, Gurjit Kaur had brought accolades to Amritsar. She was part of the Indian women’s hockey contingent that won the silver medal in the 2018 Asian Games after beating three-time champion China in the semi-finals but the Indian team lost to Japan in the finals. He said Kaur’s achievement would encourage other budding players.
“Her goal in the second quarter of the match has gone down in history since India had beaten the world number 2,” he said.
