Google Translate app that you use for translating and conversational purposes may receive a major UI refresh. This is according to folks over at XDADevelopers who observed the change during an APK teardown.

As per their findings, the Google Translate v6.21 brings up an entirely new UI, giving the app a completely new look and feel. The text box where you’d paste the text for translation is now larger and spans almost the whole screen. Below it are the two rows, first shows translation between two selected languages and the second one is a house to regular buttons for Camera, Conversations, and more. However, there is a change in their representation.

The Camera icon remains the same, but the Conversations tab is now represented by a mic icon, depicting you have to speak to translate bilingual conversations. Also, the third tab, which is currently “Transcribe,” will be replaced by “More” after the V6.21 update.

The new UI also gets rid of the hamburger menu that currently gives access to Phrasebook, Saved transcripts, Offline translation, and Settings. It appears all these menu items will now stay in the new “More” tab. This hamburger menu will be replaced by a star-shaped icon on the top-left corner after the update. Also, to its extreme right is the icon for the account.

Furthermore, as per the tech publication, a string is found in the code during the APK teardown that suggests the new design is tied to the Pixel 6 phones, Google’s upcoming smartphone lineup rumored to launch in October. This suggests Google might launch the UI refresh of the app on the Pixel 6 running the Android 12.

It is worth mentioning that while the APK teardowns give the best idea of the upcoming features, they can’t be deemed as a true source of confirmation. These are the makers of the app who decide when to push the new feature out in the live build and when to pull them back or even never release them. APK teardown shows the unimplemented changes that are likely or unlikely to join in future releases.
