World champion Sifan Hassan has made an incredible recovery from a fall at the final bell to win her 1,500-meter heat at the Olympics on Monday.
Hassan picked herself up after getting in a tangle with Kenyan runner Edinah Jebitok at the start of the last lap. She sped around the outside of the pack on the back straight and ended up crossing the line first in 4 minutes, 5.17 seconds to qualify for the semifinals.

Hassan has qualified to run in the 5,000-meter final later Monday at the Olympic Stadium, when the energy she expended on that last-lap scramble in the 1,500 heats might catch up with her.

US Shot Putter Raven Saunders in First Olympic Podium Protest
US shot putter Raven Saunders has risked disciplinary action after making the first podium protest of the Olympic Games. The 25-year-old African-American athlete crossed her arms in an "X" gesture during Sunday's medal ceremony at the Olympic Stadium after claiming silver in her event earlier in the day.
US media outlets reported that Saunders, who is black and an outspoken supporter of LGBT rights, said her gesture was made in solidarity with "oppressed people". After clinching her silver medal on Sunday, Saunders said she wanted to represent "people all around the world who are fighting and don't have the platform to speak up for themselves."

Thanks to boxer Lovlina Borgohain, her native villagers finally see a road being constructed in their locality. The state government are working overtime to make 3.5 dilapidated, muddy road motorable in time for Lovlina to return with an Olympic medal from Tokyo. The road leading to Lovlina’s home in Barmukhia usually turns muddy when it’s rains. There are over 2,000 other inter-connected roads that are not graveled in the area.
