To make sure your favorite vegan ice cream doesn’t irritate your stomach or get your blood sugar levels up, Danielle McAvoy, MSPH, RD, a registered nutritionist and senior manager of nutrition at Territory Foods, recommends checking the label for what type of sweetener it is it is used. “Many different types of sugar are used in non-dairy ice creams, and some have less of an impact on blood sugar levels,” explains McAvoy. She advises looking for coconut sugar, which has a lower glycemic index than cane sugar, dextrose, or tapioca syrup.
