SIVASAGAR, Aug 2: The Congress party in Sivasagar district and more particularly in 107 Thowra constituency is yet to come to terms with its MLA Sushanta Borgohain’s desertion and his joining the ruling BJP on Sunday.
Several Congress leaders have openly criticised him for the move. Leader of the Opposition and Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia, after visiting the Thowra Congress Office, on Sunday said, “Sushanta is an opportunist who has betrayed his own people”. Saikia urged the party workers in Thowra to avenge his betrayal through the ballots.
Former MLA Pronoti Phukan, said, “Sushanta has done injustice to the party and above all the common people who voted for him.”
Suruj Dihingia, once a close friend of Sushanta and an influential Congress leader in Upper Assam said, “Sushanta is trying to catch fish in the mud while throwing away the one already in his hand.” He further urged the party workers to have patience and wait for the right opportunity to give him a befitting reply.
Monoranjan Konwar, once a close aide of Sushanta Borgohain said, “We thought Sushanta would be a bright star in the political domain, but this move of his has proved that he is a falling star.”
On the other hand, Dharjya Konwar, general secretary, KMSS, Sivasagar district said that Raijor Dal will lend support to the Congress party in Thowra against BJP. Meanwhile, 106 members of the Nangalamora Primary unit of the Congress party also resigned following Sushanta’s joining the BJP.
