Gearing up for next year’s municipal corporation elections, the BJP’s Delhi unit is yet again banking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity in the hopes of countering the Aam Aadmi Party. The BJP, which heads all three municipal corporations in Delhi, has been in power for three terms and faces significant anti-incumbency.
In a recent meeting with councillors, Delhi BJP president Adesh Kumar said that if they manage to add 1,100 new users to the NaMo app, they would get a chance to meet party national president J P Nadda. And with 5,100 new users, they stand a chance to meet the Prime Minister himself.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Gupta said the idea is to take the work done by the PM to the ground: “With this, our ecosystem will also be strong. Workers who add 1,100 new users will be able to meet Nadda ji and those adding over 5,000 people will get a chance to meet the PM. I have held more than 100 meetings with karyakartas on this issue.”
The NaMo app informs people of the work done by the PM, hosts surveys, and gathers feedback. The party aims to add 2.5-3 lakh new users to the app by the end of this month.
The party believes encouraging workers to make more people download the mobile app will ensure that its messages resonate at the ground level and beat anti-incumbency before the civic body elections scheduled for early next year, said a senior BJP leader.
BJP leaders said that about 1.5 lakh people in Delhi have installed the app, launched in July 2015.
General secretary of the Delhi BJP, Harsh Malhotra, said the app gives news of central government schemes: “So, if our workers are active there, they will further publicise the content on social media or among the people.”
He said that till now, office bearers have held more than 300 meetings and party workers have been told to download and publicise the app.
