Travelling 35,583 kms, covering 23 States and four Union Territories in the country in the last five months, two persons, research scholars from the Department of Tourism Studies, Pondicherry University, successfully completed their mission at Rameswaram on Sunday.

Trying to make their name in the Guinness Book of World Records, G.V. Dheelepan, the research scholar, and his associate J. Adamsonraj, alumni of Pondicherry University, left Puducherry on February 7.

The duo under the category ‘Journey by the longest scheduled public transport in a single country,’ covered their journey by traveling in 43 trains, 34 buses and eight flights.

Mr. Dheelepan in a triumphant mood after completing the mission informed the Hindu that they broke the previous record in 2018 of 29,119 kms.

The main purpose was to inspire people that they could travel by adhering to the standard operating procedure during the pandemic. There was an urgency to revitalize tourism as it had been hit in a tremendous bad manner due to COVID.

Mr. Dheelepan, as a tourism student explained that domestic tourism brought in much needed synergy and inspiration. Youngsters, who enjoyed travel, had loads of tourist spots in India itself to see.

Though language barriers at few places were experienced in the northeast, the reception by the locals was warm and pleasant that the problem got easily solved. The traditional food served in Agartala was delicious and it was the most memorable visit of the whole trip, they added.
