Prime accused of Sangrampur hooch tragedy Nur Islam Fakir awarded life sentence

Kolkata, Aug 2 (UNI) Prime accused of Sangrampur hooch tragedy, that killed 172 people
in 2011, Nur Islam Fakir was awarded life sentence by a court of law in the city here on
Monday.
The 6th ADJ Court of Aliporem which on Saturday held Nur Islam Fakir alias Khora
Badshah as guilty in the Sangrampur liquor tragedy that took life of 172 people in
South 24 Parganas in 2011, today pronounced the quantum of punishment with life
sentence.
The other seven accused, including his wife Shakila Bibi, were acquitted due to lack
of evidence.
The liquor tragedy, one of the worst in West Bengal, happened on December 13, 2011,
after drinking a home-brewed alcoholic beverage known as chepti. The drinks contained
methanol, a highly toxic chemical which, when ingested, can lead to blindness or death.
Within 48 hours, the death toll rose to 143 and finally took the lives of 172, mostly manual
workers.
