Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber said his side's stunning win over the British & Irish Lions in Cape Town on Saturday was "for the supporters".

The Boks scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to emerge 27-9 victors, squaring the series at 1-1 with next weekend's clash at Cape Town Stadium now the decider.

With the series being played behind closed doors as South Africa continues its battle against the coronavirus pandemic, there has been an eerie feeling at the stadium for the first two Tests.

Nienaber, though, said his players have felt the support of South Africans despite them not being physically in the stadium.

"The supporters were unbelievable," Nienaber said after his side's victory.

"From 14:00 this afternoon at our hotel [The Cullinan in Cape Town] - there is this piece of grass outside - people came with their kids and it was incredible to see them shouting and singing for us.

"Then on our way to the stadium, the support we got from the people of South Africa was unbelievable. I'm getting goosebumps just sitting here.

"I'm so happy that we could have done this for them, because they went through a lot of trouble to show their support.

"This one is probably for the supporters for backing us, even in these Covid times where we don't have crowds and you're so distant from your support."

While the second half performance from the Boks was superb, Nienaber said there was more to come and that they were not yet at the level of performance that saw them win the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

"We got everyone together on 26 June. From then, we've only had two full weeks of training," he said.

"Are we there yet? No, we're not. We're building towards that and the more continuity we get and the more we will improve.

"The key thing for us is to stay humble, to not get arrogant and to work hard.

"Knowing this group, they are level-headed and I am sure they will stay on task with that."
